IN PRAISE OF POPE FRANCIS?
This post is an article by Fr. Longenecker who reviews a book on Francis which looks at the Pope's social agenda. Anyone with eyes can see the philosophy of social justice promulgated by Francis and have some sympathy with it, for materialism is as great an enemy to our well-being as is communism. And he points out rightly that at least communism is overt, whereas materialism poses covertly to seduce us.
First off, I will reproduce a comment that a reader posted following the article. Then I will post the article. Following that I will give my own opinion, albeit reluctantly, but only because my 'opinion' is a factual answer that is omitted by Fr. Longenecker.
It is the job of those who support the Holy Father to back him up, as the reviewed book appears to be doing, not carp over his deficiencies and lament his lack of meeting our exacting standards. He initiated, and others fill in. That is actually the correct order, and not to present the world with a complete air-tight manifesto. To inspire and let the people of God think it out is far better, is it not?
Here in the beginning of Lent, we are supposed to reconcile, and give others (including God) the Benefit of Doubt. How about we give Francis a break?
